Day 20 – The 23 Days of Christmas

Welcome to Day 20!  I hope you have been scouring My Vast Blog Empire to find each day’s song (or songs, sometimes there is more than one per day!).

Well, today’s song is here – The Twelve Gifts of Christmas by Allan Sherman.  Yet another novelty song take-off on “The Twelve Days of Christmas”.  It reminds me of my favorite gift as a kid, which was…a Japanese transistor radio!

I loved that radio.  But it’s not something that kids today would appreciate, not with all of the new, fancy electronics gifts out these days.  That radio didn’t cost much, but still, I appreciated it.

My family could never have afforded to buy me gifts like iPods, cell phones, TVs and other stuff kids today take for granted.  It’s only now, as an adult, that I can afford to buy these things for myself.

And it makes me appreciate them all the more!

What beauty products do you swear by?

Well, my number one thing has to be my Bare Escentuals makeup.  I can’t believe how much better my skin looks since I started using their foundations!  I will NEVER use a cream or liquid foundation again…that stuff just gunked up my pores for years!

Of course, using some good acne treatments helped clear my skin. I am currently using a well-known brand that you know from TV, but I will be switching over to a drugstore brand that is half the price…and also frees me from auto-shipments that I can’t always afford.

As for hair care, my favorite is the Sheer Blonde shampoo and conditioner, from John Frieda.  It really does make my hair feel and look better, and it’s well worth the extra cost.  Besides, I often can get it on sale.

So, what do YOU like?

Day 17 – The 23 Days of Christmas

I bought this collection of classic Christmas TV specials at the Wally-World out in Sturbridge this past weekend.  We were out there for the weekend, to visit Old Sturbridge Village.  Only problem was, when I got it home and opened it, the DVD with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” on it was missing!

Well, we weren’t about to drive all the way back to Sturbridge to exchange it.  So I called the store and asked if it would be okay to exchange it at a Wally-World that’s closer to us.  Thankfully, they said yes, as long as we had the sales receipt, which we did.

So Mike took it to the Wally-World that’s not too far from his work, and got me a complete set.  He even opened it in the store to be sure all of the DVDs were there.

Anyhoo, in honor of now having my Rudolph DVD, I present to you a three-fer…three songs from that show.

After all, it’s not Christmas without good ol’ Burl Ives, is it?  Please right-click to save to your own computer.

As a bonus, here is a video of “Holly Jolly Christmas”, from the Rudolph show. Enjoy!

Quick & Easy Card Making Project

Did you know that you can make eight different greeting cards with little more than one sheet of 8 1/2 x 11″ patterned paper, four sheets of  8 1/2 x 11″ and perhaps a few embellishments?  Well, you can, and I’m going to show you.

This technique is called “one sheet wonders”, and no, I did not invent it.  It’s made the rounds of various crafty message boards over the years.  I used this technique to make Christmas cards to send out, but this would also make a nice gift of coordinating note cards.  Just package it up nicely, in a box or in one of those cellophane bags from a craft store, add envelopes and tie it up with a ribbon, and voila!  A nice and inexpensive gift!  Not as fancy as a dream trip to vegas, but hey, times are tough!  A handmade gift shows that you put some thought and effort into it, much nicer than buying some cheapy bauble at the dollar store.

What You Will Need:

  • One 8 1/2 x 11″ sheet of patterned paper
  • Four 8 1/2 x 11″ sheets of cardstock, color coordinated with the patterned paper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or paper trimmer
  • Adhesive
  • Your choice of embellishments (die-cuts, stickers, additional paper/cardstock, etc.)
  • Template (provided below)

Each sheet of cardstock is to be cut in half on the horizontal, to make two cards that measure 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches.

This is the template for cutting your patterned paper. You can click on it to see a larger one.  What I like to do is flip my paper over to the blank side, and measure and mark it that way.

See the squiggly line between the two pieces for Card #3? Make that cut with a pair of deckle-ediged or other decorate-edge scissors, if you have them.  If not, just carefully tear it, you want sort of uneven edges here.

Once you have all of the pieces cut out, it’s time to go to town and assembe your cards.   There is no right or wrong way to do this.  So I’ll just show you what I did with mine.

Rather than use pre-made patterned paper, I made my own by stamping on an 8 1/2 x 11″ sheet of white cardstock, with red and green inks.  The kitty with holly stamp is from Magenta, the solid holly stamp is from Posh Impressions, and I don’t remember where I got the pawprint and “Meow” stamps.

Cards #1 and #2 are pretty much identical.  You can orient the cards any way you want, here I did one with the fold horizontally and one vertically.  You can see how I repeated the kitty design on the solid colored card.  I stamped it with white pigment ink, and heat embossed it with white embossing powder, to make it stand out.  I spelled out “Meowy Catmas” with die-cut letters…the ones here are from Quickutz.   But don’t go looking for these specific fonts, they’ve long since been discontinued.  Sorry!

If you don’t have a die-cutting system, you can always use letter stickers, which are pretty inexpensive to buy.

Finally, I finished these off by adhering ribbon, as shown.

The rest of the cards are after the jump.

Day 13 – The 23 Days of Christmas

It’s now Day 13 of my 23 Days of Christmas project, which is going on all over My Vast Blog Empire.  Today’s song is All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey.  No particular reason for it, except that I like it.

It’s actually Friday as I type this, but I’m setting this to post Sunday.  We’ll be at Old Sturbridge Village for their Christmas festivities.  Although we’ll be home Sunday, I might be too tired to post the song when we get home.  And I don’t know how well the free WiFi will work at the hotel this time.  The last time we were there, we were put in the back end of the building, and WiFi, nawt sew gud, akshully.  So I’ve set this to post in the future, that’s something I love about using WordPress.

Of course, now that I’ve posted all weekend’s songs *in the future*, we’ll be put in a room where the WiFi works.  Let’s hope!
