We’ve all seen those commercials for Mucinex (warning:  site has auto-play sound and video), featuring this green booger dude and his family and friends.  Some people think these commercials are gross, I think they are kind of funny.  And they must have some effect, because remembering one of the commercials is what made me decide to try this product.

Normally, when I have a cold with sinus congestion, I take regular Sudafed…not the PE crap (that doesn’t work for me AT ALL), but the original one, with pseudoephedrine.  It’s a bit of a pain to buy this kind, because you have to get it at the pharmacy counter, show ID, and sign something promising you won’t use the product to open up a meth lab.  Whatever, just as long as I can get something that actually works!

But with this cold, the regular Sudafed wasn’t cutting it, I mean, it works, but it wears off quickly, within 4-5 hours.  And I ran out of the stuff to boot.  So I woke up on Sunday morning with serious sinus pain.  I remembered the commercial for Mucinex D, and it did kind of feel like I had the “Mucus Family Reunion” taking place in there.

I know that Sudafed makes longer-lasting formulas.  But I decided to try the Mucinex D instead, to see if it really would work better and last longer.

There are several varieties of Mucinex.  But Mucinex D contains pseudoephedrine, as well as guaifenesin, so by law, it can’t be sold directly off the shelf, you hav to ask for it at the counter and sign that paper and all.  Other forms of Mucinex are available off the shelf.

This stuff works, works fast, and it does last 12 hours as advertised.  The only mistake I made was to take it on an empty stomach.  You see, after we went to CVS to buy the stuff, we went into a nearby restaurant for some lunch.  My head was still hurting, so I took some right there in the restaurant, before I even ordered any food.  But my stomach did settle once I got something to eat.

So today I took it with food, and didn’t get the upset tummy at all.

This stuff is kind of pricey…I bought a package of 36, which was on sale at CVS for $18.99.  The regular price was $23.99.  I also had a $3.00 off CVS Extra Care coupon.  The next smallest size, I think it was 20-count, went for $14.99 and was not on sale.  But to me, it’s worth the higher cost than thst of Sudafed, because this stuff really works!
